It is black Friday here at the farm: that is, the plants have turned black as the frost is here. The eggplants and peppers have finally swan-songed. Enjoy our last hurrah of the warm season vegetables.
Now, let's talk Turkey!
This year we have worked with Apple Ridge farm to set aside a turkey option for our CSA members who choose to support a local turkey farmer. Hans raises pastured birds in the Ridgebury section of town on the old McKeon farm. They are delicious and fresh and will be available for pickup here at The Hickories with your last CSA share the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. You MUST reserve your turkey online by placing an order/deposit in our online store: click here. We give first dibs to CSAers on these turkeys, but will open it up to non-members next week once you all have had a chance to purchase. Hans sells his birds at $7/lb. Most of the turkeys will weigh in two ranges: 18-24 and 24-30lbs. If you have a specific size in mind, please include it in the comment section of your order and he will do his best to get close to your requested weight.
In this week's share:
- salsa, red
In one final note, Laura has restocked the fridge with fresh pork back from the processor. I recommend some pork chops with vinegar peppers (I made the pickled peppers by soaking our fresh peppers in a bowl of vinegar in my fridge until I wanted to make this recipe.) With a kale salad and some roasted eggplant, it made for a fantastic Autumn CSA meal!
