June 2017

Dear All,

Thunderheads rolled overhead last night as a good sign of a change in weather – and change is what we need right now.   March came in like a lion and out like a lion.  April showers brought only more May showers and grey days.  Soil temperatures remain cooler than in past years so crops are slow to take hold.  What’s a farmer to do?  The answer is plenty!  We plow and harrow fields; we roll out irrigation lines; we cross-check our crop rotation against bed-feet of crops to be planted.  Springtime is an all-day flamenco dance for us: a fiery time of renewal and days that are over before you know it.  Mornings begin in the chill air, hunched over hot coffee mugs, and by noon the fence-posts are hung with jackets and long-sleeve shirts as the sun starts to penetrate, and the labor of the day warms from within.

It’s June (and that means strawberry season!) in the Farm Store:  CSA members will hit the strawberry patch with abandon next week, but throughout this weekend, we will keep the Farm Store stocked with the first strawberries from the field! We will have our asparagus, fresh greens, spring garlic, and field cut flowers, too. The meat freezer is stocked, in case you are eager to break out the barbeque. The Hickories Farm Store is open daily, 11am-6pm.

Certified Organic Seedlings: Fill up your springtime garden plot, patio, or window-boxes with fresh vegetables and herbs from The Hickories.  Come check out the racks outside the farm store: our organic tomatoes (a sampling of our taste test winners), kales, greens, onions, lettuces: pick up a 6-pack of seedlings and give it a try!  Tuck a few sungold tomatoes into the flower beds for a sweet summertime surprise.

The Hickories Trout Pond is open for fishing: sign up for afly-fishing class here (makes a great Father’s day gift) or simply register for “open fishing hours” on our website here. Be sure to read the description, so you know what to expect when you come.  (We can supply a few rods and flies if you need them.)  Try your luck and skill and go home with a fresh trout, spring asparagus, and strawberry short-cake fixings: a meal fit for a loca-vore kings and queens!

CSA sign ups: Our summer CSA program is just beginning.  We are still accepting a few last minute shares before the season is fully underway: secure yourself and your friends and family a supply of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables all summer long.  Memberships make a great gift for colleagues, too.  CSA members get “first dibs” on our harvest, pick-your-own access to our fruit, and discounts on farm tours, workshops, and events. Click here to sign up.

Firefly Yoga at The Hickories begins next week!  Meet here at the farm on Wednesday nights 7:00-8:00pm in June, July, and August.  Pre-registration is required on the website:  fireflyfamilyyoga.com/classes. This class, offered by Ellen Bonheim, one of our CSA members, is open to everyone from prenatal to beginners - anyone looking to relax, stretch, breathe and enjoy being outside! Embrace the nature that surrounds you to help tap into your inner calm. Bring a water bottle and a beach towel to place under your yoga mat. Call Ellen at the studio if you have any questions!

Enjoy this beautiful weekend.  Enjoy some delicious farm food!

Best,

Dina Brewster
