I woke up to Alex, our Apprentice, pulling into of the farm driveway at 6:15 this morning - trying to beat the rain with her harvest. Nick is away and she is taking the reins for a few days. So this is her CSA, and it's a beauty!
Alex has a particular interest in medicinal and tea herbs, so she is offering a sampling of fresh tea greens this week. You will receive a small bundle of fresh mountain mint (a native mint), lemon balm, or lemon verbena. Fresh teas are unfamiliar to some but the instructions are easy enough even for an amateur cook like me: just boil water. Pour the hot water over washed herbs in a tea pot and let steep for five minutes. No joke, it's as easy as boiling water. And on a blustery day like this, it will be a welcome bit of warmth. Another option is to let the tea then cool in the refrigerator and serve it over ice on a sunny day.
Annual Garlic Harvest this Friday 4-6pm: This Friday we are pulling the garlic from the fields - and we are inviting anyone to join us as we celebrate! There is something for anyone: pulling the crop from the fields, stringing it up in bundles and hanging it from the rafters. It is just a quick bit of fun farm-work and a good excuse to gather together - many hands make light work. Feel free to bring a picnic basket and blanket to enjoy the view after your labors in the field!
In this week's share:
- snap beans (for those who did not get them last week)
- cippolini onions
- braising mix (chard, kale, and Laura's favorite - broccoli leaves!)
- fresh tea
All the best,
