Respect for life and work is a central tenet of our work here at The Hickories. It occurred to me, no matter how many legs you have: two, four, six, or eight – you have an essential job to do, and without the whole team moving together, the strength of our little farm web would be compromised.
This year, we at The Hickories raise sheep, lamb, goats, and pigs – all happily grazing on certified organic pastures. We raise our animals not just for the delicious meat that our customers enjoy, but also because they benefit our land. The lamb, sheep, and goats feast on grass, clear overgrown areas, and strengthen the soil with good old-fashioned manure. The heritage-breed pigs root and turn the soil, eat invasive plants, and preserve the nutrition of our excess vegetables by consuming them.
